Winterize Checklist for Multifamily Property Owners & Managers
Are you prepared for the coldest months ahead in Chicago? Inside-Out has prepared a checklist for multifamily property owners and managers to ensure your property, residents, and staff are ready to conquer any inclimate weather.
- Inspect your building exterior. Look for leaks on the roof or walls. Inspect your doors and window frames for holes and gaps. Use weather stripping or caulking to seal these areas and eliminate sources of cold air.
- Clear gutters and downspouts to allow snowfall and rain to drain properly.
- Schedule a check-up on your building’s HVAC system. Ensure your property’s heat is functioning properly.
- Use weather stripping to add a second layer of protection to hold heat inside.
- Remove any damaged trees on the property.
- Winterize community pools and hot tubs.
- Disconnect and drain outside hoses and faucets. Service any underground irrigation system for winter.
- Test and change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Stock up on winter building supplies, such as ice melt, shovels, and equipment.
- Follow up with vendors who are responsible for snow removal before a winter storm hits.
- Communicate with residents. Encourage them to report any issues immediately to a specific phone number or email address.
Keep in mind, unexpected winter events may occur so inspect your property weekly if possible. Call the experts at Inside-Out if you notice any problems right away
